Over the last decade, the median age in Yea District (SA2) has increased from 45 to 51 years old. The area is notably older than other parts of Murrindindi and significantly older than the rest of rural Victoria. Ageing of the local population also appears to be accelerating at a faster rate than other rural areas. The population has a high proportion of older adults (55+ years) and a very low proportion of younger adults (15 to 34 years).
The dependency ratio is a measure of the number of residents that are not of normal working age (e.g. too young or old to work) relative to the number of residents of working age (15 to 64 years old). The dependency ratio in Yea District has increased in recent years. This is due to the rapid ageing of the population in the area, and the outward migration of younger adults.
