Yea Overview

Settlements along the Goulburn River appeared as early as1839, and the town was surveyed and laid out in 1855. Gold was discovered soon after, and following the proceeds of the goldrush, Yea survived on farming and timber-milling. The railway to Mansfield was built in 1883, chiefly for timber transport to Melbourne. The complete rail line from Tallarook to Mansfield has now been converted to "The Great Victorian Rail Trail" and has become one of the region’s major tourist attractions
